New Visitor Center Planned
Current Situation
The Visitor Center was built in 1962 to serve 20,000 annual visitors. However, each year the Center serves over 20,000 fourth grade students in addition to a portion of Fort Vancouver National Site's 800,000 annual visitors. This overcrowding forces the organization to turn away potential educational programs for the community. In addition, the site's restrooms only allow access from outdoors.
Future Plans
Fort Vancouver National Trust is undergoing a capital campaign to raise $750,000 to support the $5M renovations project of the future Visitor Center. The goal is to design a Visitor Center that serves the entire campus, including Fort Vancouver, Officers Row, Vancouver Barracks, Pearson Air Museum and Land Bridge. The space will comfortably serve the increased number of school children that pass through as well as the numerous groups and families throughout the year.
With increased capacity in the theater and museum, the new Visitor Center will bring both interactive and engaging exhibits. The addition of multi-purpose rooms for interpretive demonstrations will enhance the educational programs that are currently offered. A larger, fully enclosed bookstore is also part of the overall design. And, restrooms that are accessible from inside the Center. This new state-of-the-art facility will be built with sustainable methods.
